Volunteer Connection Mission Statement
The Volunteer Connection supports adult learners through a caring network of volunteers dedicated to promoting literacy.
Our volunteers attend trainings at the Minnesota Literacy Council and are then placed in SHAPE classrooms assisting teachers, tutoring one to one, or working at one of our collaborative locations where ESL programs are held in the community.
Our goal is to help adults learn to communicate in the English language in a comfortable, one-to-one or small group learning environment, with a focus on functional aspects of language use. This could include topics such as citizenship and adjusting to and understanding U.S. culture and society.
Classroom volunteers provide assistance to a SHAPE instructor in ESL and basic skills instruction in a classroom setting. Tutors may work as a general assistant, focus on specific topics such as writing or work one-on-one with a student who requires extra assistance. The instructor will provide support and materials for tutors.
