In accordance with the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) we have a fact fluency expectation for all of our students in grades 2-5. Fact fluency means an automatic recall of basic facts, which allows students to solve more challenging or complex mathematical problems. The expectation for fact fluency for third graders is 25 addition AND subtraction problems correct in 2 minutes. Students progress toward this expectation is monitored in the classroom with a written assessment. Your assistance at home with helping your child achieving fluency with basic facts is greatly appreciated. A resource that may be helpful is listed below.

An algorithm is the name for a process used to solve a mathematical equation. Because of the goal of having all students successful in mathematics, we teach a variety of algorithms to solve equations. While they may look look quite a bit different than how you may have learned them, the rationale is two fold: first, to anchor the understanding of the meaning of the calculation which is primarily rooted in place value; secondly, to provide students with exposure to a variety of ways to arrive at an answer to a problem, so that each individual may choose a way that is most successful. A link to animations of the algorithms may be found here: www.everydaymathonline.com
Find the area that says "Free Family Resources" at the top of the page, and click on the button that says "Launch."
