Standards in Grade 4

Parent Resources

Parents and other caring adults are essential partners in the education of children. We appreciate the opportunity to work together with you to help your child be successful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Fact Fluency
In accordance with the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) we have a fact fluency expectation for all of our students in grades 2-5. Fact fluency means an automatic recall of basic facts, which allows students to solve more challenging or complex mathematical problems. The expectation of fact fluency for fourth graders is 25 addition, subtraction AND multiplication facts correct in 2 minutes. Students progress toward this expectation is monitored in the classroom with a written assessment. Your assistance at home with helping your child achieving fluency with basic facts is greatly appreciated. A resource that may be helpful is listed below.

Another fun way to practice is with a free game that can be downloaded from this site: www.bigbrainz.com/Multiplicationb.php
We also have a districtwide license to download Everyday Math games on to your computer. Please contact your child's classroom teacher for information.

Algorithms
An algorithm is the name for a process used to solve a mathematical equation. Because of the goal of having all students successful in mathematics, we teach a variety of algorithms to solve equations. While they may look look quite a bit different than how you may have learned them, the rationale is two fold: first, to anchor the understanding of the meaning of the calculation (rather than following steps) which is primarily rooted in place value; secondly, to provide students with exposure to a variety of ways to arrive at an answer to a problem, so that each individual may choose a way that is most successful. A link to animations of the algorithms may be found here: www.everydaymathonline.com
Find the area that says "Free Family Resources" at the top of the page, and click on the button that says "Launch."
There you will find several resources, including animations of various algorithms.

Everyday Math Family Letters
The link below will bring you to the Everyday Mathematics Family Letters which are available in a variety of languages. The letters include an overview of the unit of study, as well as a glossary of vocabulary terms, "Do Anytime" activities, and help with Homelink activities.
