Girls tennis coach ending coaching career on high note

Longtime Jefferson High School girls tennis coach Lynn Larson is wrapping up her coaching career on several high notes. She and assistant coach Tom McNutt were selected as Section 6AA Coach and Assistant Coaches of the Year, respectively. They coached their team to a 14-7 record, the most wins in a season. The team also received its highest seed ever (sixth) in a tough section.

Larson retired from teaching math at Jefferson in 2021 and is now retiring from coaching after 36 years. She started coaching girls tennis in 1988 at Kennedy High School. She started out by coaching alongside her father, Marv Hartung, who also taught math at Kennedy.

“It was a joy to finish my coaching career with my dad as one of my assistants at Jefferson. Things came full circle,” said Larson.

“I loved coaching high school girls and teaching them a lifelong sport, and then watching them grow into such impressive young women. I’m still in contact with many alumni and they are changing the world,” she added.

Larson plans to coach the boys team in the spring, where she is the assistant coach alongside head coach McNutt, who is also retiring from coaching the girls team. McNutt has been assistant coach for the girls team since 2013.
