Jefferson girls hockey assistant coach Sierra Johnson was named Section 6AA Assistant Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Girls High School Coaches Association. Johnson is in her fifth season with the Jaguars, which finished the season with an 11-16 record. However, Johnson notes the team’s meaningful achievements far outweigh the wins and losses.

The Jaguars defeated rival Academy of Holy Angels for the first time in six years and hosted a section quarterfinal playoff game at home for the first time in 11 years, which turned into the team’s first home playoff win in 13 years.

“What made this season so special was the team’s hunger to learn and grow. Not just as hockey players, but as people,” said Johnson. “The girls’ work ethic was incredible. They pushed each other to be better every single day.

“All these girls grew up playing together, developing in our youth program and chose to stay and represent their community. There’s something powerful about going into battle with teammates who feel like sisters.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled by receiving this award,” said Johnson. “The truth is these girls are my ‘why.’ No award can compare to the pride and joy I feel watching them grow and seeing their smiles on the ice.”
