Student volunteers with Bloomington Educational Community Television (BEC-TV) continue to produce award-winning broadcasts, including BEC-TV’s first nationally-recognized sports production and its fifth consecutive AV All-Star.

Students will accept the national Hometown Media Award from the Alliance for Community Media for their sports coverage of the “Battle of Bloomington” Kennedy vs Jefferson boys hockey game on Jan. 30, 2024. Jefferson 9th grader Thomas Fyler led the production team under the direction of BEC-TV staff Paul Fourniea and Tom Ringdal. The live broadcast featured six cameras, replays, interviews, and play-by-play commentary by Josh Powers who has been calling Jefferson and Kennedy hockey games for 25 years.

Jefferson senior Lucas Krieg earned an AV All-Star award from the Midwest Emmy Foundation. The regional award recognizes Krieg’s leadership and excellence in working behind the scenes to make the magic of live video production happen. Krieg has been with BEC-TV for seven years, working on more than 200 productions and serving as student producer for live football coverage and the weekly “Inside Football” coaches program; both of which have previously earned Crystal Pillar awards from the Midwest Emmy Foundation.

“Lucas is the last student who started with us at BEC-TV before the pandemic. As a middle schooler at the time, Lucas was front and center as we learned how to do great productions remotely by controlling robotic cameras, following health and safety guidelines. He continued on to be one of our most reliable student leaders,” said Tom Ringdal, BEC-TV director.

BEC-TV is a student-driven video production team serving Bloomington Public Schools for 50 years, producing and airing more than 30,000 shows. BEC-TV accepts students in grades 7-12 to help broadcast live video productions. Learn more at www.bectv.org.
