Bloomington School Board Announces Legislative Priorities

State lawmakers visiting special education students

The Bloomington School Board Legislative Committee will advocate for Minnesota lawmakers to address funding shortfalls, modernize testing and enact safety policies during the 2025 Legislative Session.

Before the session began, committee members welcomed state representatives and senators to Oak Grove elementary and middle schools, offering them a firsthand look at the financial challenges and needs facing Bloomington Public Schools. The tour included visits to special education classrooms, one of several funding areas highlighted in the School Board’s 2025 Legislative Priorities. Additional priorities include:

  • Fully fund special education services, English learner (EL) and extended time programming
  • Permanent state funding stream for unemployment insurance of unlicensed employees
  • Increase per pupil funding in 2026 and into the future to account for inflation
  • Replace Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) with the ACT as the standardized test for high school students
  • Develop a plan to share educational information with student families about the importance of safe and secure firearm storage

Advocacy efforts will include participating in the Minnesota School Boards Association and Minnesota Association of School Administrators Joint Day at the Capitol on March 10, and urging Minnesota’s U.S. Senators to support the Board’s federal legislative priorities.
