BPS enrollment increases, exceeds projections
Published on Dec 03, 2024
K-12 enrollment in Bloomington Public Schools exceeded projections and increased for the first time in three years according to the district’s 2024 Enrollment Report. The report is based on the state’s official Oct. 1 count of students from early childhood through age 22.
Report Highlights:
- K-12 enrollment is 9,799, an increase of nearly 120 students from last year and nearly 180 students above projections. This is still more than 200 fewer students compared to pre-pandemic enrollment.
- Total district-wide enrollment is 10,691 when including early childhood (691) and programs for students ages 18-22 (201), an increase over last school year.
- This year’s kindergarten class of 628 is a slight decrease from 2023-24.
- Open-enrolled students make up 10 percent of the district’s enrollment, an increase of one percent from last year. Open enrollment is a sign of high interest in BPS programs and an important source of state funding.
- The district’s student body is 58 percent racially/ethnically diverse, also up one point from a year ago.
- The percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced price educational benefits is 45 percent, a four percent decrease from last year. Even though meals are free, families still need to apply for educational benefits to ensure schools maintain critical funding that benefits all students. Families of any income level can apply for these benefits.
