The Bloomington Public Schools School Board approved the operating budget for the 2026-27 school year, including a recommendation to maintain the current student walk areas of 0.5 mile for elementary and 1.25 miles for secondary, and removing the planned walk area expansion. This means there are no changes for students who currently receive bus transportation to school.

The recommendation followed recent action by the Minnesota Legislature allowing school districts to use operating capital revenue for utility service costs. The proposed walk area increase was expected to generate approximately $750,000 in transportation savings. The district believes the new budget flexibility can cover that savings target without increasing student walk areas. 

We heard clearly from families that the proposed walk area changes would have a significant impact on students and families. While the district continues to face financial challenges, including declining enrollment and rising operating costs, this legislative action provides a less disruptive option for this specific budget reduction.

“I wish to thank our parents, caregivers, staff and community members who shared concerns about the impact a walk-area change would have on students. While we had to identify savings, when a less disruptive option became available, we chose the path that protects students and families from a significant transportation change,” said superintendent Dr. Eric Melbye.

The District will continue working with the City of Bloomington on safe walking routes, crossing concerns, traffic mitigation and Safe Routes to School planning.
