School Board Meeting Recap: Feb. 23, 2026

The School Board held its regular business meeting on Monday, February 23, 2026.
Meeting Highlights
- The School Board heard a report from Superintendent Dr. Eric Melbye about the significant impacts of Operation Metro Surge on students, families, and schools. The report outlines disruptions to attendance, lasting impacts on students, and how staff have adapted to support and teach students. The report also highlights the District’s support efforts including regular communications, a resolution affirming student safety, direct support with transportation, food and bus stop support by our social workers and support staff, and connecting families to trusted resources in the community.
- The School Board approved and ratified the 2025-27 contract between BPS and the Custodial, Maintenance and Transportation Employees SEIU Local #284 bargaining group.
- The School Board approved several student fee increases for the 2026-27 school year to cover rising costs, including athletic and activity fees and some event admission fees. Student parking fees and admission to band, orchestra, choir and theater/musical productions will remain unchanged next year. Student graduation fees will not change for 2025-26.
- The School Board approved two calendar changes for the 2026-27 school year.
- Aug. 31: First day of school for grades 6 and 9 only. Grades K-5, 7-8 and 10-12 will begin on Sept. 1.
- Oct. 2: Professional learning day for elementary staff. There will be no school for grades K-5; grades 6-12 remain in session.
