School Board Meeting Recap: Nov. 24, 2025

The School Board held its regular business meeting on Monday, November 24, 2025.

Meeting Highlights

  • The School Board heard highlights about the middle school theatre program from Oak Grove Middle School musical director and choir teacher Bryan Blessing and co-director Megan Borgerding. All three middle schools expanded programming to add a fall production this year in addition to their spring musical. A district-wide summer musical theatre program was also introduced, featuring students in grades 4-8 representing seven of our schools in James and the Giant Peach last summer.
  • The School Board approved Mall of America as the venue for the Jefferson and Kennedy high school prom on May 8, 2026.
  • The 2025 enrollment report was presented, representing the official enrollment numbers as of October 1. Highlights include:
    • K-12 enrollment is 9,688 students, a decrease overall compared to last year, although enrollment is slightly higher than projections.
    • Total EC-22 enrollment is 10,482, including early childhood through transition programs. This year’s kindergarten class of 588 is down 40 students from 2024-25.
    • Enrollment is directly tied to district funding and the budgeting process, so the district tracks and monitors year-to-year enrollment trends.
  • The School Board approved a contract with CEL Public Relations to provide kindergarten enrollment marketing support. This is in response to consistently declining enrollment across the district, with an immediate focus on increasing kindergarten enrollment.
  • The School Board approved Laurel Needham and School Board Student Representatives Elsa Ackerman and Samia Mohamud as new members of the Bloomington Public Schools Advocacy Council (BPSAC). The purpose of BPSAC is to:
    • Lobby/advocate for BPS legislative priorities
    • Advocate for referendums
    • Support district strategic planning process
    • General district advocacy
