School Board Meeting Recap: September 28, 2026

The School Board held its regular business meeting on Monday, September 28, 2026.

Meeting Highlights

  • The School Board rescinded a previously approved $5 million budget reduction for 2027-28. The District has addressed fiscal challenges through $13.4 million in reductions the past three years while continuing long-term financial planning. District leaders now recommend developing the 2027-28 budget without reductions following prudent right sizing, preliminary audit figures, enhanced state reimbursements, fall 2026 enrollment and updated general fund enhancements. However, projections indicate further reductions will be needed for the 2028-29 and 2029-30 budgets.
  • The School Board approved a bid from Carleton Companies Inc., Mankato to conduct the demolition of Southwood Center and Bloomington Stadium. Demolition is expected to be completed on or before Nov. 13, 2026. The district’s consultant believes clear sites will provide more interest and result in the highest market price when it comes to selling the properties.
  • The School Board approved a contract with H+U Construction to provide construction manager services for renovations at Pond Center. This is part of the district’s agreement to lease the majority of the building to partner Intermediate District 917, which provides specialized programming to member districts.
  • The School Board approved new rates of pay for reserve classified employees. It’s the first update since 2010 and better reflects changes in contracts that have occurred in that time.
  • The School Board once again approved Mall of America as the location for this year’s Jefferson and Kennedy High School prom taking place May 7, 2027. Students will have access to the Parkview Meeting and Event Center and Nickelodeon Universe.
  • The School Board swore in its two student representatives for the school year: Jefferson High School senior Elsa Ackerman, and Kennedy High School senior Xachary Chappelle.
