Jefferson program wins Star of Innovation Award

Jefferson High School’s TJ Coffeehouse program for special education students received a Bronze Star of Innovation Award from the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP).

Each month, the school cafeteria transforms into TJ Coffeehouse, run by special education students who make drinks, sell food and accept money and make change while providing quality customer service. Jefferson students and staff are invited to visit the Coffeehouse to purchase drinks and snacks, and district staff, law enforcement and other visitors attend to support Jefferson students.

“TJ Coffeehouse has brought together students who might not otherwise interact with each other,” said Jefferson Principal Jaysen Anderson. “This program adds immensely to the positive school climate at Jefferson.”

Each year, MASSP awards Gold, Silver and Bronze Star of Innovation Awards to member schools across Minnesota for the development and support of exemplary and innovative education programs in their schools.
