School Canceled Wednesday, Feb. 20
Due to the projected snowstorm, Bloomington Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, February 20. This includes all early childhood through grade 12 schools in the district.

Additionally, the following programs have been canceled:
  • All early childhood programs, including preschool, ECFE, ECSE and screening programs.
  • Kids’ SAFARI, Early Learners Academy and Galaxy
  • Metro South Adult Basic Education
  • Community Education
  • Adult and youth enrichment classes
  • The district’s two Activity Centers at Jefferson and Kennedy high schools
High school students participating in athletics/activities should check with their coaches.

Kennedy senior named High School Heisman winner

Kennedy senior Emily Smeltzer has been named a Wendy’s High School Heisman school winner and will receive a $500 college scholarship.

Emily SmeltzerSmeltzer was selected from a pool of nearly 42,000 high school student athletes. To qualify, students must have a GPA of 3.0 or above, participate in at least one sport and be a leader in their schools and communities.

Smeltzer is a track and field athlete at Kennedy. She is a three-time team captain and four-time letter winner and earned two all-conference honors and two all-conference honorable mentions. She is a three-time academic letter winner and member of National Honor Society and Bloomington Police Explorers. She also participates in club gymnastics.

Smeltzer plans to attend Hamline University next fall to study criminal justice and continue her track and field career.
