Bloomington Public Schools and its business and civic partners collected nearly 12,000 pounds of food and $10,378 in cash donations during its 12th District-wide Food Drive late last month. The annual food drive was postponed the past two years due to the pandemic.

This year’s total collection of 49,171 pounds when the cash donations to pounds conversion is applied will provide nearly 50,000 meals. Each dollar donated accounts for three meals, and each meal is approximately 1.2 pounds. All of the food and cash is donated to Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP), a non-profit agency serving low-income families and individuals in Bloomington, Edina, and Richfield.

VEAP serves 10,000 people a month, more than half of whom are children. The district’s Parent Teacher Student Advisory (PTSA) Council, Bloomington School Board and its Youth Advisory Council coordinated the annual food drive, and had set a goal of 40,000 pounds.

The annual food drive has collected 588,817 pounds since its inception in 2009.

Bloomington’s public schools, early childhood centers, central departments and business and civic partners participated in the drive, including Boyum Barenscheer, Cedar Valley Church, City of Bloomington Fire Department, Martin Luther Campus, Northstar Tavern, Oxboro Evangelical Free Church, Quality Bicycle Products, United Methodist Church, and Wooden Hill Brewing.
