Jefferson Chess Team Places Third in State

The Jefferson chess team placed third in the State High School Chess Championship, closely finishing behind the first and second place teams. Three students placed in the top 20 statewide: National Master Troy Cavanah, (2nd), Jack Bellinger (15th), and Joseph Gaul (17th).
Team members include: Ryan Alfred, Noah Bachman, Praseed Balaji, team captain Bellinger, Cavanah, Andrew Davies, Joseph Gaul, William Greenfield, Suwani Hernandez, An-Khang Nguyen and coach Dane Zagar.
The chess team received a Student Group Mini-Grant to help offset costs for coaching and travel. The competitive chess team and extra-curricular chess club are open to new or experienced players.
