Special Education Services

Special Education services are provided to approximately 1,700 children ages birth through 21 within the community of Bloomington. Special Education is specially designed instruction and related services that enable a student with an identified disability to access and benefit from their educational program. Independent School District #271 provides specialized instruction in a wide variety of ways. From our early intervention home-based services to community-based vocational training, we provide students with a quality individualized education program (IEP) in the least restrictive environment. We provide unique programming options for students who qualify for one or more of the thirteen areas of special education eligibility established by the State of Minnesota. Specialized education programming is provided at each of our sites, and center-based programs are located at several sites within the district.

Special education transportation is provided as a service based upon individual student needs. For a student to be eligible for special education transportation, the student's IEP team determines that a need for special transportation exists and incorporates it into the student's IEP.
