Bloomington Community Education's Aquatics has been offering programs for nearly 30 years. Our swim lessons and water fitness programs run year-round and offer convenience, affordability, quality staff and facilities, plus a community atmosphere!

We also rent our pools to the public for special events and occasions.

Bloomington Education Aquatics teaches classes for all ages of swimmer. Whether you have never been in a pool or just want to a refresher, we have the class you are looking for including:

  • Swim lessons for children and adults

Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are American Red Cross trained to teach your children how to swim through the Learn-to-Swim Program.

Lifeguards are trained and have CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications.

Cancellations

  • Cancellations that are customer-initiated must be received within five or more business days in order to qualify for a full refund, minus at $10 processing fee, per person, for each class cancelled. 
  • Cancellations made less than 5 business days prior to the start of the class will not be eligible for a refund.
  • There are no refunds issued after the class has begun.
  • Community Education reserves the right to cancel a class that does not meet the minimum enrollment.
  • No makeups for missed classes.  There are no refunds or credits for missed classes.
  • A refund will not be given on the classes that have already been attended or passed.

Parent & Child Aquatics

The Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills including:

Little Swimmer

4 to 5 years

This class provides children their first pool experience without parental assistance in a safe, fun and positive learning environment. The primary objective of the Pre-School class is to promote developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills. Instructors help children adapt to the pool and learn how to move independently through the water.

Requirements for signing your child up for this class:

  • Has participated in a recent parent & child class
  • Toilet trained
  • Able to listen and follow directions for 30 minutes
  • Child will be okay without parent or guardian in the pool
  • Able to hang onto the wall for 30 minutes

Little Swimmer - Level A: Beginner Swimmer

This level orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills by:

  • Enter and exit water safely by using ladder
  • Blow Bubbles
  • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
  • Front and back glides
  • Float on back
  • Swim on front and back using arms and legs

Little Swimmer - Level B: Intermediate Swimmer

This level will help children gain greater independence in their skills, become more comfortable in and around the water and start to gain basic swimming propulsive skills by:

Level 3: Intermediate Swimmer

Student must have passed Level 2.  Must be an independent swimmer.  Swimmer must be able to perform Front Crawl, Backstroke and Elementary Backstroke without assistance.  

Builds on the skills with practice in deeper water by:

  • Jump into deep water from the side
  • Bob with the head fully submerged
  • Use rotary breathing in horizontal position

Private Swim Lessons

We offer Private Swim Lessons on a limited availability.

6 years and older

Private and Semi-Private lessons are available for those wanting individual attention to swimmer's basic skills and stroke improvement needs.  These lessons are a great way to bridge skills in-between levels.  Private and Semi-Private lessons are 30 minutes in length and can be arranged to fit your schedule.  Call 952-681-6134 for further questions or scheduling.

Water Aerobics

Leap, jump and kick to a better you with this one-hour class which is a wonderful way to tone and strengthen muscles while developing cardiovascular endurance and increasing flexibility. By having the natural resistance of the water, participants receive a great workout that is gentle on the joints. Work out in the shallow end. No swimming skills necessary for this class. Registration is required for this class. 

Aqua Zumba

Known as the Zumba "pool party", Aqua Zumba gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout.  Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting and laughing are often heard during a class. Integrating the Zumba formula and the philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that's cardio-conditioning, body toning and most of all fun!  It is not your typical aerobics class. You will dance in the water at your own speed.  Aqua Zumba is exercise in disguise.  Registration is required for this class (water fitness cards will not be accepted).

Open and Lap Swim

Bring your friends and family for good times in the pool for open swim or to swim laps for a great low impact workout.  Purchase a punchcard for Open and Lap Swim from the Bloomington Community Education office.  Cannot be purchased at the pool.  Call 952-681-6132 to purchase a punchcard.

Water Safety Instructor

This course trains instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim and other water safety programs.  

Prerequisites:

  • On the first day, you must be able to pass a swimming stroke test.  
  • Attendance is mandatory to all class sessions.  
  • Be prepared to be both in and out of the water each day of the class.  
  • Students must complete the online portion of the course (7-9 hours) in addition to participating in the classroom and water skill sessions.  

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Training

This comprehensive course is designed to instruct course participants in the skills and knowledge needed to become a lifeguard. Course candidates will learn how to recognize, prevent, and respond quickly to aquatic emergencies. The course also instructs participants in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid. Participants will receive the certifications listed above, mentioned materials upon completion of attending all class sessions, passing all written exams, water skills and tests. Prerequisites:

  • Participants must be 16 years of age or older
  • Ability to pass pretest. Pretest of 300 yard swim using front crawl with rhythmic breathing and breaststroke. (Must swim 300 yards continuously)
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7 – 10 feet retrieve 10 pound brick, return to surface, swim 20 yards back to starting point with object, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
  • Certifications received upon completion of course objectives and passing score of 80 percent correct of course final exam.

Lifeguarding and First Aid certifications are valid for three years. CPR-PR, AED are valid for one year.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Training

This course trains instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer courses.  

  • Age Prerequisite: Participants must be 17 years of age or older.
  • Certification Prerequisite: Current American Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  • Skill Prerequisites: Successful completion of Lifeguarding swimming prerequisites, demonstration of competency with Lifeguarding skills, and demonstration of competency when responding to scenarios involving rescues and emergency care. 
  • Students must complete the online portion of the course (2-3 hours in length) before participating in the water skills sessions.
  • Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory, be prepared to be both in and out of the water each day.

The USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash initiative is a national child-focused water safety campaign, which aims to provide the opportunity for every child in America to learn to swim. Through Make A Splash, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with learn-to-swim providers and water safety advocates across the country to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim.  The USA Swimming Foundation has invested millions of dollars to provide grants to qualified Local Partner learn-to-swim programs, to spread national awareness, and to bring together strategic partners to end drowning.  To date, more than 6 million children have received the lifesaving gift of swim lessons through the USA Swimming Foundation Make A Splash Local Partner network, comprised of more than 850 qualified lesson providers across the nation.
