Bloomington Community Education offers Enrichment classes to K-12 youth, as well as some limited preschool classes. Classes are held after school in the elementary schools, and evenings and weekends at other district locations.  Some classes are located at class provider locations. Classes are taught by local youth program vendors and school district staff who have a passion and commitment to working with children.

Classes are available year-round and can be found in our catalog, which is delivered to Bloomington homes three times per year: August, December, and March. In the catalog you will find information regarding all our programs and classes for Early Learners, Young Learners, and Adult Learners.

Community Education Youth Enrichment offers a variety of summer, school year, and evening enrichment, education and recreation opportunities for children of all ages.

Classes are available on an on-going basis at a variety of school locations throughout the school district in the areas of:

  • creative, visual, and performing arts
  • self-reliance and esteem building
  • academic and recreational enrichment
  • self-defense (including kung-fu and karate) 
  • recreational and educational sports

Future Chefs!  Cookies.....BIG Ones

Grades 1 - 5     $12

Would you like to learn how to make BIG cookies?  I heard you say yes!  In this class, chef Jessica Tijerina will guide you through the steps necessary to make giant cookies.  Giant cookies that stay soft and yummy for up to 7 days!  What's the trick?  Chef Jessica has been working on the recipe for over 20 years and she wants to share it with you.  We'll gather the ingredients together, measure, mix, chill, bake, and store these extra large cookies.....Chocolate Chunk and Snickerdoodles....Oh My!  Join us and learn the tricks of the trade for making Big Cookies.

Multiplayer Minecraft: Map Builder

Grades 3 - 7     $75

Work as a team (online) to create a custom multiplayer adventure map.  Choose to design an in-game dungeon or build a castle to explore.  Together, use command blocks to create the world!  Learn the internal language of Minecraft and use it on yourself and others in a multiplayer server.  Teleport, trap, and prank each other using a variety of different commands and command block types.  Students will receive a copy of the world to continue development.  For this online class, students will need a computer: PC (Windows XP or later) or Mac (OSX) with at least a 2GHz processor and 4GB of RAM., internet access with at least 1.5Mbps download and 600Kbps upload speeds, a webcam, microphone and speakers, and Google Meet Video Conferencing.  Student will need Minecraft Java Edition.  This class will be held via Google Meets with a Tech Academy Instructor.

It's adventure time in Minecraft!  In this camp you'll learn the ins and outs of creating a custom adventure map, stunning worlds and gain a greater understanding of Minecraft's mechanics.  In addition, you'll learn how to create your own levels.  An immersive camp for both beginner and advanced Minecraft fans.  Basic Windows and keyboarding skills are required for this class.  Minecraft account is required and Minecraft Java needs to be installed on your computer.  You will also need high-speed internet access.  This class will be held via Google Meets with a Tech Tac Toe instructor.

Online Magic 1.0

Java Minecraft Modding

Grades 4 - 8     $75

In this camp, we will be creating custom armor, items, and blocks.  Learn to mod Minecraft using Java and the Forge API and customize your gaming experience.  Students will be introduced to coding concepts and learn how to use Eclipse, a professional tool for editing and debugging code.  Students should be comfortable with keyboarding, and of course, playing Minecraft.  For this online class, students will need a computer: PC (Windows XP or later) or Mac (OSX) with at least a 2GHz processor and 4GB of RAM., internet access with at least 1.5Mbps download and 600Kbps upload speeds, a webcam, microphone and speakers, and Google Meet Video Conferencing.  Student will need Minecraft Java Edition and Eclipse.    This class will be held via Google Meets with a Tech Academy Instructor.

Roblox Game Design - Obby

Coding: Hacking Java Games

Grades 3 - 8     $75

Virtual Coding with Scratch

Grades 3 - 6     $60

What's more fun than playing an interactive video game?  Writing one!  Video sensing allows students to design and program their own video games and then test them by interacting with the program via webcam.  In this Scratch program, students create their own games, art, and musical instruments while exploring coding foundations.  Get up and get moving with Engineering for Kids and Scratch!

 To take this class, students will need a computer/laptop with a webcam, and a mouse.  A solid internet connection watching EFK flex videos and accessing Scratch.  No download is required, however, you can download Scratch if you would like to use it offline.  All of these lessons utilize the webcam functionality in your web browser.  If you're using an external webcam, please make sure all necessary drivers have been installed and updated.  The driver should install automatically when plugging your webcam into the USB port.  If you are having trouble connecting your webcam you will need to review the instructions provided from your manufacturer.

Virtual Introduction to App Development

Grades 3 - 6     $60

App development has increased manifold in the past 5 years due to lower costs and easier access to essential tools, so give your engineer the knowledge to stay ahead in today's technological society.  We're offering a unique experience in which students get to code, test, and create their own apps in real-time using an easy-to-understand format.  The best part about this program is that they'll be able to save their created apps right to their (or your own) devices for play anywhere, anytime!

To take this class, students will need a computer/laptop with a webcam, a mouse, and a solid internet connection.

Virtual Kodu Kart Racing

Race to the finish and create your own racing game in Microsoft's Kodu gaming environment.  From terrain design to enemy selection, students are placed at the wheel and given full control to design their own video game while exploring the foundation of coding.  Kick your creativity in gear with Kodu Kart Racing.  To take this class, students will need a computer/laptop (PC only, not compatible with Mac or Linux), and a mouse.  A solid internet connection.  Students will also need to download and install the free Kodu Game Lab.

Virtual Minecraft Madness

Minecraft is an expansive game that lets players design and create unique worlds with amazing structures.  Explore engineering concepts through Minecraft in this pre-recorded video series.  This class will introduce students to potential and kinetic energy, electrical engineering through Redstone, chemical engineering through farming and more!  To take this class, students will need a computer/laptop, a mouse, OR Gaming Console (PS4/XBox/Nintendo Switch).  Any modern version of Minecraft with Creative Mode; or purchase Minecraft Java.  And a solid internet connection for watching the Engineering for Kids video (no internet connection is required for the game.

Science Explorers STEM Kit #1

Have fun with three STEM topics included in this at-home STEM Sampler Kit: chemistry, aerospace and electricity. First, explore the three most common states of matter in our environment: solid, liquid and gas. Next, discover the four forces that allow planes and rockets to fly: thrust, drag, weight and lift. Then, build and test an electromagnet and learn how the electromagnetic field was first discovered.     Cancellations

    • Cancellations that are customer-initiated must be received within five or more business days in order to qualify for a full refund, minus at $10 processing fee, per person, for each class cancelled. 
    • Cancellations made less than 5 business days prior to the start of the class will not be eligible for a refund.
    • There are no refunds issued after the class has begun.
    • Community Education reserves the right to cancel a class that does not meet the minimum enrollment.

    Music education opportunities are for students age 7 through adult. Our current options include piano lessons only.

    Bloomington Community Education partners with A+ Driving School to offer two options for Driver's Education programs. 

    Summer 2020 Class Schedule

    Classroom Instruction and Behind the Wheel (all summer classes are online)

    • Cost is $395
      • A $70 deposit is paid to Bloomington Community Education when registering for the class. 
      • The additional $325 is paid directly to A+ Driving School. 
      • A+ Driving School will bill parents directly for remainder of the payment.
      • Please work directly with A+ Driving School regarding payment plans.
    • Students may register if they are 14 1/2 years of age. 
    • Blue cards will be mailed to students by A+ Driving School.

    Driver's Education: Behind-the-Wheel (no in person registration at this time)

    • Cost is $295
      • A $35 deposit is paid to Bloomington Community Education to receive your Blue Card. This fee is non-refundable.
      • The additional $260 is paid directly to A+ Driving School. Contact A+ Driving School to discuss payment options.

    • After completion of the high school classroom instruction classes (taught at Jefferson and Kennedy high schools), the student will receive a letter of completion and information about registering for the six hours of behind-the-wheel training with A+ Driving School.

    Summer of Laughs, Adventures, and More (SLAM) programs bring together a diverse list of enrichment opportunities over the summer for students entering grades K-8. The program is fee-based with a catalog that is sent home each spring. More than 100 camps are offered every summer.

    SLAM camps are scheduled as five-day camps and are offered as a morning or afternoon option or a full-day option with a supervised lunch.

    GRASP registration has now closed

    GRASP is a nine week correspondence program for grades 4 - 8 that helps students maintain reading and math skills while they are on summer vacation.
