Jefferson students compete at national speech and debate tournament

Four students represented Jefferson High School at the National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Phoenix, Ariz. June 11-16. 

Senior Will Moen placed as an octafinalist, finishing in the top 60 out of 262 entries in the Humor category. Junior Kailey Tan placed as an octafinalist, finishing in the top 60 out of 244 entries in the Original Spoken Word Poetry category.

Tan and junior Kehan Chen competed together in the Duo Interp category. Senior Darian Whittet competed in the Congressional Debate Senate category.

The debate team is coached by Meredith Aby and Arthur Harris. Scott Sieling, Arthur Harris, Cassie Pagel, and Toby Tremain coach the speech team.

The National Speech and Debate Association is the largest interscholastic speech and debate organization serving middle and high school students. Around 6,000 students from more than 1,200 schools across the country compete at the National Tournament.
